American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that supplementation with the antioxidant coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) 100mg daily, may improve heart function in patients with heart failure, according to a new systematic review and meta-analysis. There is an ongoing trial on effect of Q10 on heart disease and mortality. We await further news. In the meantime, there is no evidence to justify taking it in a preventive role in a healthy individual.

Vitamin D

Breast cancer patients with insufficient vitamin D levels have a worse prognosis after standard treatment plus zoledronic acid than those with normal levels of vitamin D, according to a preliminary biomarker analysis of the AZURE trial reported at the 35th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Although the impact of vitamin D levels is clear from the study, “it is not clear that the results provide a signal to supplement”. There is also a report today in the news –noting increasing risk of rickets in cave-dwelling (PC daft) youngsters.

Once again supplementation is being encouraged and we know some adults are at risk too (the elderly, especially if in care homes). If you are anxious about these reports why not get your blood levels of Vit D checked before making the decision to take pills?
