Nappers

So what did Winston Churchill, JFK, Napoleon, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison have in common? They were afternoon nappers. Siesta junkies. At the European Society of Cardiology a presentation from Greek researchers demonstrated that nappers had reduced blood pressure and those with high blood pressure needed fewer drugs to control it. Interesting – but for how long is a nap. Their study quoted 60 mins at midday. NASA research suggests 40mins was fine for astronauts’ alertness. On the other hand longer than 30 mins in some people was associated with sleep inertia (woozy feeling for up to 30 mins after awakening). So if you want to try it out for its health benefits – not too long and not too late in the day seems to be the message. Be alert – your country needs you!
