High fat dairy may prevent diabetes   16/09/2014

People who eat and drink high fat dairy products may be protecting themselves against diabetes, researchers have revealed.

The finding, from a study in Sweden, is surprising as high fat milk products are regarded as fattening – and many people choose low-fat options.

But, according to the researchers, they could find no link between low-fat dairy products and diabetes risk.

The link may be because high fat dairy foods, such as cheeses, cream and yoghurts, dampen the appetite for more damaging choices – such as foods rich in sugar or red meats.

The findings were revealed at the conference of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Vienna, Austria.

They come from a study of more than 26,000 people in Malmö, Sweden.

Researchers found that people who ate the most high-fat dairy foods enjoyed a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes of between 15 and 20% compared with those who ate the least.

Researcher Dr Ulrika Ericson said: “The decreased risk at high intakes of high- fat dairy products, but not of low-fat dairy products, indicate that dairy fat, at least partly, explains observed protective associations between dairy intake and type 2 diabetes. Meat intake was associated with increased risk of developing diabetes regardless of fat content.

“Our findings suggest, that in contrast to animal fats in general, fats specific to dairy products may have a role in prevention of type 2 diabetes.”

* A second analysis reported yesterday claimed that consumption of dairy products is linked to reduced blood pressure and risk of heart disease.

The findings were unveiled at the 12th Euro Fed Lipid Congress.

Dr Sabita Soedamah-Muthu, from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, reported on findings from nine pieces of research involving more than 57,000 people including 15,000 people with high blood pressure.

She said there was a “link between increasing the number of glasses of milk a day and a lower incidence of hypertension.”
