Good health news?

teddybear-landscapePartly, so no excuse to take the foot of the health pedal.
In the US (we can assume the UK is similar) there is falling mortality from cancer (down 25%), Stroke (down 11%), Heart Disease (down 4%). Deaths from lung disease is level but deaths from drugs, both prescription and non-prescription increased by a whopping 25%. (By the way, Lifestyle Medicine espouses a low tech, low intervention approach – this includes very careful prescribing and prevention/reversal of 80% of these long term conditions).

But obesity is on the rise (so is Diabetes) so how can all this be happening? The improvement is thought to be due to recognising the risk factors – principally smoking.

Dementia in people over aged 65, from stats between the years 2000-2012, is in steep decline. But numbers are still high. Low odds (ie good) are associated with education, wealth and being overweight (!). Higher odds (ie not so good) are associated with old age, being underweight and suffering diabetes.
