Diabetes – make it go away!

liverQuestion: How much fat do you need to lose to shake of your Type 2 Diabetes (T2D)? Answer: 1 gram. Yes, 1 gram but it has to be from your pancreatic gland! (Paper published by Taylor et al yesterday in Diabetes Care).
As a doctor I can recall several patients who reverted to ‘normal’ after losing weight. I have to ask the question – why can we not have millions of folk reversing their disease?
In furtherance of our burgeoning, and often confounding, knowledge I can report that precision management of disease is advancing. It is now possible to identify genetically people who suffer T2D and who carry the subset of genes most likely to provoke classical diabetes complications. This is exciting stuff!
Incidentally, the pancreas sits more in the upper middle part of your tummy, slightly hidden by the liver – which also brings complications if too much fat is around. Slainte.
