Antibiotic Awareness Week

Antiobiotics could save your life. But they are over-prescribed and hence resistance is a major global threat (WHO). 25,000 people die each year across Europe from infections resistant to antibiotics. 30 years since a new class of antibiotics was last introduced. Only 10% of sore throats and 20% of sinus infections may benefit from antibiotics. 1.5bn euros is the annual cost of EU wide healthcare expenses and lost productivity due to antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Incidentally, the right Probiotics can prevent adverse side-effects of antibiotics (Videlock et al 2012) and taken regularly have many other health benefits – but that is for another day. This is Antiobiotics Awareness Week by the way.
